Howdy, friend!
June came and went in an instant.
The Gyles gang has been in thirteen (yes, 13) states this month, stopping in some for just a few hours and others for days. It’s been such a long and wild ride, but we’ve thoroughly enjoyed this journey that we’re on.
A few housekeeping things:
I have transitioned this newsletter to a new platform, Substack. Since starting this newsletter in Mailchimp, I’ve found and fallen in love with the community aspects of Substack. Please check out my friends’ newsletters (find my recommendations here); they’re exceptional.
I am adding paid tiers to this email. If you feel so inclined, your support would mean the world. Each month, I plan to send out one small print to all my paid subscribers as a thank you. You can find more info here.
I have included a referral link at the bottom of this email. If you can share this newsletter with one person, it’d mean the world. Also, if you refer more people, you’ll gain access to the paid level of my newsletter.
I am pivoting all contacts in the “Work” newsletter group into the “Personal” section as I no longer have any photos to share from Liberty.
Okay, that’s all the housekeeping. It’s time for the photos.
Peace & blessings.

Landscapes
This month, most of the landscapes that we saw were out of my car’s windshield. We drove 4500+ miles this month, through most of the states east of the Mississippi.
When we did stop, we usually saw farmland. We were blessed to have made a few special stops. First was our time in Denver that allowed us to see the Rockies. I don’t have any photos of them (oof), but they were a refreshing sight. Second, we got to see Niagara Falls…from the Canadian side (the better side). Here’s one of those images…
As I mentioned above, we spent a lot of time surrounded by farmland. We drove straight through tons as we went from Alabama up to Michigan. When in Michigan, I spent some time exploring, documenting the area where my dad grew up one morning as the beautiful warm light lit up the surrounding farmland.
The next week, we spent some time in New York City (during the middle of a 100º heatwave lol). As the afternoon sun started to get low (mixed with the smog, ouch), the sun lit up the streets with a beautiful glow. Here are those frames.
A lot of what I have been trying to grow in has been about photographing the light where it is and really using the light. I think that the “implied” subject in these frames is the light. Not buildings and not plants, the light.
I often get jealous of my West Coast friends, eternally blessed with beautiful light and scenery. My solution to this is to create that environment here on the East Coast. I’m not always blessed with beautiful light, but I can use the light I have to be the subject. I know this is not a new realization for many of my photo friends, but after years being told to shoot in whatever conditions (usually for events or athletics), it’s a welcome change.
Documentary & Film
Currently, I have a few projects in production. Some more complete than others. Expect some updates about one soon, but in the meantime, here’s some work of a project about my dad’s life…
My father grew up in rural Michigan, particular Jackson and Pleasant Lake. For most of my life, we’d regularly visit his family in these places. Now, after his death, his ashes were scattered on Pleasant Lake. The project that I’m working on focuses on what made my father and the challenges he faced in life. It’s going to take a long time and a lot of work, but I’m slowly getting there.
The phase that I worked on this month was in Pleasant Lake. Here’s a few of those frames.
This month, I finally sent off and got some film back. I have a chronic habit of hoarding rolls of film to develop, so I actually sent some to my lab (State Film Lab, they’re the best). It was a grab-bag full of a variety of trips, so it was fun to see what I got back lol.
Portraits
Again, this month, I didn’t take a ton of portraits, shocker lol. In lieu of that, here are a few frames that feature people in them.
First up are some photos of NYC strangers from being there last week. They’re a collection of beautiful moments in the city that often feels like it lacks beauty (there’s beauty everywhere there, you just need to focus on looking for it). One is a father bringing his kids to see Messi play, all of them decked out in Messi merch, another is a sweet old lady studying the Subway map in the middle of Madison Square Park.
We also attended a wedding in Lynchburg this past weekend with all of our friends. It was so sweet to see so many special people to us. The wedding was sweet and the reception was beautiful (& fun). I’ll let the photos speak for how fun it was :)
Thanks for reading this far. I hope that the changes I’m implementing here help serve you, the viewer, better. As always, please reply (or comment on Substack) if you’d like to chat about anything you see here!
Peace & blessings,
-Chase
Darn. Sorry we missed you when you were in Michigan kiddo!
Cool to find some other people doing a similar thing with monthly photos. Substack is the way to go. Welcome here!
